BRHS Annual Show 2022

On Saturday 27 August 2022, Burton & Rossett Horticultural Society held our 72nd Annual Show at Darland High School in Rossett, and what a day we had. From Asters to Zinnias, apples to zucchini (courgette)! We had a wonderful array on display, not forgetting the 43lb heaviest marrow – what a whopper.

We had a total of 388 exhibits from 66 exhibitors which was excellent considering the difficult growing conditions we have had this year, the flowers and vegetables were superb.

Grateful thanks to Cllr Ross Shepherd for presenting the trophies this year. A lovely link to previous generations presenting the Shepherd Challenge Cup to Don Owens who ended the day with a hat-trick of trophies also winning the Shallcross Bowl and the Nat Maurice-Jones Bowl for the best exhibit in flowers and vegetables. The Banksian Medal was won by Mike Jarvis who also won the Cam-Yr-Alyn Bowl. Sheila Woolrich had the highest points in the flower section winning the E.C. Bellis Challenge Cup. Nick Pengelly was awarded the Reddrop Challenge Cup for his heaviest marrow, weighing in at 43lb. The President’s Shield was won this year by Anne Newman for best exhibit grown from a plant supplied by the Society.

In the Novice section Sian Hatton-Jones was awarded the Geoff Butler Memorial Trophy for most points in flowers class, whilst Jane Ridgway won the G Maitland Phillips Challenge Cup with most points in vegetables. Joanne Solari had the highest points on the Honey section and was awarded the Rossett WI Trophy. Joint winners in the Wine section were Tony Pinder and Keith Gabriel winning the Ross Wallis Challenge Cup. In cookery Sian Walton won the Society Cup Challenge Cup for most points, and Carolyn Bates won the 50th Anniversary Challenge Cup for the most meritorious exhibit. In the Craft Section Marian Williams won the Elsie & Emlyn Jones Memorial Challenge Cup for highest points, whilst Liz Pinder was awarded The Lady Clements Jones Cup for most meritorious exhibit. The Bernard Walsh Cup was awarded to Anne Newman for highest number of points on Floral Art, whilst Fiona Morris was awarded The Shordley Challenge Cup for most meritorious exhibit.

The Junior Section was sponsored by The Balfour Trust for Rossett and all Junior exhibitors received a gift of Spring bulbs with a metal hanging pot which were greatly received. Abigail McManus won the Llyntro Trophy for highest points aged 7 and under, also picking up the Eric Randles Memorial Cup for best exhibit in Junior section. The Investiture Challenge Cup for highest points aged 8 to 11 was won by Molly Hughes.

It was great to see the next generation of exhibitors taking up the baton and following in the family tradition of exhibiting at our show.

A big thank you to Rossett Community Council, The Balfour Trust for Rossett, Rossett Festival Committee, The Golden Lion, The Hideout, The Grosvenor Pulford Hotel & Spa, Bellis Brothers Farm Shop & Garden Centre, Cwtch Ceramics & Café, Vivid Floral Design, who all helped sponsor our event.

Our wonderful BRHS committee, Judges, Stewards and volunteers for all their help over the last few months and on Show Day, without their help we would not be able to put on these events.

Thank you to all and Happy Gardening.
