BRHS Annual Show 2023

On Saturday 26th August 2023, Burton & Rossett Horticultural Society held our 73rd Annual Show at Darland High School in Rossett, including Rossett Dog show this year. After a quick rain shower early on the sun broke through and we had a wonderful and busy afternoon.

Thank you to Jayde Davy for running her Dog Show, Bob Bates was ecstatic with his rosette for waggiest tail!

We had a total of 403 exhibits from 68 exhibitors which we were very pleased about due to our very difficult summer weather. The vegetables & flowers stood out this year with some wonderful Dahlias on display.

Thank you to our President Mrs Pat Weir for presenting the trophies this year.  The Shepherd Challenge Cup, the Shallcross Rose Bowl and the Nat Maurice-Jones Bowl for the best exhibit in flowers and vegetables were all won by Don Owens. The Banksian Medal was won by Tony Wright. The Cam-yr-Alyn Bowl was won by Mike Jarvis for the highest number of points in flower and vegetable sections. Sian Walton was awarded the E.C. Bellis Challenge Cup for highest points in the flower section.

The President’s Shield was won by Dave Burrows for best exhibit grown from a plant supplied by the society.  I don’t know how he does it!

Gwyneth Taylor won the Reddrop Challenge Cup for the heaviest marrow, whilst Kayleigh McManus won both the Geoff Butler Memorial Trophy and the G Maitland Phillips Challenge Cup in the Novice sections.

The Ross Wallis Challenge Cup for the Wine section was won by Tony Pinder.

In the cookery section Dave Burrows was awarded the Society Challenge Cup for highest points, whilst Carolyn Bates won the most meritorious exhibit with her Mary Berry Chocolate cake, winning the 50th Anniversary Challenge Cup.

Pat Weir won the inaugural Agnes Salter Cup restricted to WI members.

In the Craft section Marian Williams won both the Elsie & Emlyn Jones Memorial Challenge Cup  for most points, and the Lady Clements Jones Cup most meritorious exhibit.

In Floral Art Sian Walton won the Bernard Walsh Cup for most points, and Christine Nuthall won the Shordley Challenge Cup for most meritorious exhibit celebrating Beechgrove Garden 45th anniversary.

In the Junior Section Abigail McManus won the Llyntro Trophy (aged 7 and under) and the Eric Randles Memorial Cup for best exhibit in Junior section her wonderful bird made from fruit & vegetables. Molly Hughes & William O’Grady both shared the Investiture Challenge Cup (aged 8 to 11) for highest points.

The Junior Section was sponsored by the Balfour Trust for Rossett and each exhibitor took home a gift bag with a small succulent plant and a packet of seeds, which were gratefully received.

A big thank you to The Balfour Trust for Rossett (sponsor of the Junior Section), The Golden Lion, The Grosvenor Pulford Hotel & Spa, Bellis Brothers Farm Shop & Garden Centre, Cwtch Ceramics & Café, The Hair Lounge, Natural Balance Physiotherapy & Sports Injury, Pure Perfection, Vivid Floral Design,  and our members who all helped sponsor our event.

Our wonderful BRHS committee, Judges, Stewards and volunteers for all their help over the last few months and on Show Day, without their help we would not be able to put on our Annual Show.

Thank you to all and Happy Gardening.
