71st Annual Show

The Burton & Rossett Horticultural Society held their 71st Annual Flower Show on Saturday 28th August at Darland High School, the first for two years following last year’s event going virtual due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The sun shone and the show was well attended by exhibitors and visitors who had 352 exhibits from 58 exhibitors. These ranged from Flowers, Vegetables, Craft, Cookery, Floral Art and our Junior sections.

There were 52 entries in the Flower section, 119 in Vegetables, 7 in the Novelty, 65 in Craft, 63 in Cookery and 15 in Floral Art.

The Junior sections had 31 entries and the Llyntro Trophy presented for the highest points in Junior aged 7 and under, was won by Emme Maurice-Jones. Elin Pain won the Investiture Challenge Cup for the highest points aged 8 to 11, also picking up the Eric Randles Memorial Cup for the Best exhibit in the Junior section for her beautiful photograph of a Garden ‘Friend’ or ‘Foe.’

The Junior Section was kindly sponsored by The Balfour Trust with each prize winner receiving some Wildflower seed bombs, a packet of Butterfly friendly wildflower seeds and every junior exhibitor receiving a plant pot to paint.

The E.C. Bellis Challenge Cup for most points in the Flower section was won by Val Overson, whilst Mike Jarvis won the Cam-Yr-Alyn Bowl for most points in Flowers and Vegetables sections together.

We had some very impressive exhibits in the Novelty Section from the 21” longest Runner Bean won by David Weir, and the enormous Misshapen Beetroot won by Nick Pengelly.

Don Owens had a very successful afternoon winning the Shepherd Challenge Cup for most points in the vegetable section and the Nat Maurice-Jones Bowl for Best Exhibit in flower and vegetable section for his 5 Tomatoes. He then picked up the prestigious Banksian Medal – the highest award the Royal Horticultural Society allows a village society to award for the highest aggregate points in flower and vegetable sections.
